What is National Stress Awareness Day 2021?

Set up by the International Stress Management Association (ISMA), National Stress Awareness Day is there to raise awareness of the effects of psychological distress in the workplace, as well as to share strategies to address it.

Stress in the workplace.

Being ‘stressed’ and feeling the pressure of something challenging at work is in some ways, a normal part of life – there’s no getting around that. Sometimes a certain low-level of stress can help us perform better and drive results!

However, when it becomes too much, stress can manifest in physical symptoms such as a difficulty sleeping, irritability, changes in eating and drinking habits. All of which aren’t ideal in the workplace.

It’s a funny thing, stress.

It creeps up on you when you least expect it. One minute it’s driving you to succeed and the next that feeling of overwhelm is insurmountable.

Of course, everyone’s individual life circumstances contribute to their stress levels and what they feel able to cope with. What seems like a minor problem to one may be causing sleepless nights to another and as professionals we can’t always leave what goes on outside of the office at the door. But as professionals, what can we do?

Avoid being a ‘stressor’.

There’s a wealth of information out there, on how to cope with stress but something that we believe is of equal importance is how to not cause stress to others in the workplace.

Whether it be colleagues or employees, here are a few of our top tips for avoiding causing unnecessary stress to the people in your professional circles:

1. We know pressure and deadlines are often unavoidable – but the way in which they are communicated can often make a huge difference. Where possible try and sit down properly to communicate a deadline or piece of work to ensure everyone has time to process the information and ask questions. Stress is often a response to feeling out of control, so allow everyone to gather their thoughts when presented with a new piece of work rather than interrupting them with a big list of new ‘to do’s’.

2. Boundaries in the workplace are extremely important. Not only should you establish your own, but you should be supportive of the boundaries others around you may set. Whether that be how they like to be communicated with or what times they are reachable. Decide what are your non-negotiables and respect the same in others.

3. In much the same way you would on a turbulent flight, you need t

o put on your own oxygen mask before you help others with theirs. Be on top of your own stressors and act as a calming influence within your organisation. Try to act rather than react and people will often follow your lead. Eat right, sleep well and hydrate and you’re already off to a good start.

Do you have any top tips for helping your colleagues and employees battle the pressures of the office? We’d love to hear them!
